The New Mamas and The Papas

The New Mamas and the Papas was an American vocal group. It was John Phillips' recreation of his earlier band, the Mamas and the Papas, as its name implies. Its membership fluctuated over the years, but initially consisted of frontline vocalists John Phillips, Denny Doherty, Mackenzie Phillips and Spanky McFarlane. Music director John Kito (a.k.a. John Buonamassa) and long-time friend of John Phillips, Scott McKenzie, were a mainstay and part of the backline band. Scott McKenzie was also a key featured performer in the show.
The New Mamas and the Papas had various band members throughout their 16 years of music and touring both nationally and internationally. After some initial success, the frontline vocalists remained the same until 1986, when Mackenzie Phillips was temporarily replaced by vocalist Laurie Beebe (a.k.a. Laurie K. Lewis, now Laurie Beebe Lewis) during her pregnancy with son, Shane, in October 1986. Doherty dropped out of the band in 1987. John Phillip's old friend, Scott McKenzie, replaced Doherty.
Mackenzie Phillips returned to the band in June 1987 and continued to struggle with drug addiction. In late 1991 and John Phillips began to show signs of liver failure and became very ill. The same year Mackenzie left the band permanently and Laurie Beebe Lewis continued as her replacement until March 1993.〔Thomas K. Arnold ("When Not With The Papas, This Mama Sells Cars", ) ''Los Angeles Times'', 10 July 1987. Retrieved 14 June 2013.〕
John Phillips left the New Mamas and the Papas in 1992 after a liver transplant. Scott McKenzie replaced John Phillips and the frontline of the New Mamas and the Papas remained Denny Doherty, Scott McKenzie, Spanky McFarlane and Laurie Beebe Lewis until the mid-nineties. The band soldiered on with more personnel changes until 1998.〔(Concert Date List for the Mamas and the Papas and Related Groups ), John Phillips Research Project. Retrieved 14 June 2013.〕
